Applying for the Making Medics pathway
Choosing your A-Levels
Most universities like you to study biology and chemistry at A-level so these two are an obvious choice.
For your third A-Level, it is best to look online and check the entry requirements for the universities you are applying to. Some, for example Cambridge, require Chemistry and then any two from Biology, Human Biology, Maths or Physics, while Brighton and Sussex suggest an arts or humanities subject for aspiring medics to broaden academic horizons.
If you do not have a definitive third option that you have enjoyed most at GCSE, then speak to your teachers - if you’re struggling to make up your mind, they’ll be able to advise you to choose the right A-Levels to suit your interests, prior attainment and academic strengths.
Letter of application
You should produce a letter that explains why you feel you are an ideal candidate for the making Medics pathway. You should include:
Why you are interested in the A-Levels you have chosen
What has motivated you to think about studying medicine at university
Which aspects of medicine you are interested in – is there a particular field that you have researched e.g. emergency medicine or paediatrics?
Any prior experience you have that supports your application – you may be a St Johns first aider or have experience of caring for a relative
Any personal skills you have that you feel will make you an ideal candidate – communication skills; time management; empathy; team skills etc.
The letter should aim to be no more than 1 side of A4 in Arial font, size 11 and should be submitted by email to makingmedics@felpham.org.uk by June 10th 2022
Interview
Candidates will be invited to interview with the Making Medics selection panel towards the end of June. You will be asked questions based on the information provided in your letter and you will have the opportunity to raise any questions you have about the programme.
